This is an alphabetical list of the names of fictional places occurring in James’s novels, tales and plays. As well as enabling you to track down the source of a name you remember, it is also fun to browse the variety of names and the types of place – notice the preponderance of English country houses.

In Robert L. Gale’s A Henry James encyclopedia (1989) there is an entry headed ‘Houses, mansions and other imagined places in James’s fiction and plays’, which provides a short list of such creations, giving just the name (or part of the name) and the work(s) in which each appears. Unfortunately Gale’s list contains fewer than a third of the ‘imagined places’ – it doesn’t even include all the ‘houses [and] mansions’ – so this is a much fuller list of fictional places in James’s work than is given by Gale. For comparison, I have indicated in the ‘notes’ column where the name is included in Gale’s list. (Note that Gale also includes ‘Beccles’, the location of Mr Longdon’s unnamed house in The awkward age, in his list, but in error: Beccles is a real town in Suffolk, near Lowestoft.)

Notes: where not otherwise specified, places are ‘somewhere in England’; entries are included for places which can only be inferred (for example ‘Rockingham’, which has a Dean, and the ‘River Dwindle’, which has a town built on its banks), but not for names only given with an initial, such as ‘L—’; names starting with a generic element or article are shown and filed in an inverted order so as to appear under the distinctive name, for example ‘Castle Gaunt’ as ‘Gaunt, Castle’, and ‘Hôtel de la Garonne’ as ‘Garonne, Hôtel de la’. The notes column shows whether the name occurs in James’s notebook name lists by using the abbreviation ‘in nbn’ (linked to the entry in my index). I cannot claim that this is yet a complete list, in particular I have not yet made a comprehensive survey of names in the following novels: Roderick Hudson, Confidence, The other house, and The sense of the past, although some entries do already exist for some of these works. Please suggest omissions.
